MAF Medical Evacuation for Pregnant Woman

A map showing the route that the MAF plane took from Goroka to Owena, then to Marawaka and then back to Goroka.
A young mother from a remote village in Marawaka had given birth to her first baby, but had a retained placenta. The health centre did not have the proper equipment to assist the young mother so the community health worker reported the patient’s condition to MAF to arrange immediate transport for the patient to receive help at the Goroka General Hospital.

On their way to Marawaka, MAF stopped by Owena, to pick up a 19-year-old girl from a remote village in Owena. The Patient showed signs and symptoms of edema. She had difficulties walking for a few weeks and had to endure excruciating body ache due to swelling from her left ankle down to her foot. The remote health centre at Owean did not know the cause so they reported her case to MAF to arrange a medevac. Both patients from Owena and Marawaka where air lifted to Goroka where they could receive medical help and treatment from the doctors at the Goroka General Hospital.

Due to the isolation and limited access to basic health equipment’s and medications in a remote community, it becomes a constant struggle for patients living within a remote setting to receive proper help and treatment when needed. But we thank the Lord and appreciate the work that MAF continues to do when it comes to providing a way for patients living in hard to reach places to receive the necessary medical help and assistance needed.
